I joined because I wanted to deepen my understanding of AI ethics and find a community that, like me, is genuinely concerned about what we're seeing and its impact on society. What I found went far beyond learning. It's about AI literacy, collective thinking, questioning, and imagining better futures. We learn together and grow together, guided by Catha, who leads the discussions with so much clarity, depth, and generosity. The club has become one of my favorite moments of the month.

The book club is such a great space to have meaningful conversations and learn from each other. It's being very enriching to see beyond the technology and learn how it impacts our daily lives. Catharina is extremely knowledgeable and it's been a privilege to learn from her: structured, organised, thought provoking.

It's a delight to have these discussions and meetings. There is a lot of bias in the world, and I currently don't have many friends who show serious concerns about these topics, so having people to talk with and listen to is great!

I LOVE The AI Survival Club!

I work in civic tech, passionate about democracy and tech for good. I thought I was quite well versed in AI and the risks and ethical dilemmas surrounding it, as I work for a tech advocacy group/nonprofit. BUT I have learned a lot through this book club. It has forced me to find time to read more about different aspects of AI and critique it — and those who make it — from different angles. Most valuable so far has been understanding the tech bros and their ethos, and understanding how we can fight back. Your presentations have been invaluable for helping me understand some of the more challenging themes and make them stick in my brain. It has also been nice to chat with others and not feel so alone in my frustration with how those around me use and view AI. I was honestly going to leave just because I can never make the meetings (darn kids) but the online group is so valuable and it is so so great to have the recordings on hand, so I can feel like I was there. Participating in Catharina's book club has been an incredibly enriching experience. She has an extensive background in AI ethics and carefully curates the bibliographic references she shares. This helps us understand how AI permeates every aspect of our daily lives and influences our decisions, from the most significant to the most mundane. The community she has created is diverse, bringing together experiences and reflections from people around the world. After all, the issues we discuss concern all of us.

First and foremost, this book club has given me HOPE. Meeting with people who are seeking to expand their worldviews to have profound conversations about life, humanity, and our role in the AI future has not only broadened my perspectives but also helped me continue to move forward in co-creating a world I believe in. Catha, your tenacity and generosity in curating the list of books and leading our experience has taught me about AI ethics, literacy, and our shared humanity.

I joined the AI Survival Club to address the growing anxiety I felt about generative AI popping up in every aspect of my life. I was not expecting how much I would get from it. The community is very active and diverse, and Catharina's guidance helps name a lot of the concepts that fly around AI discussion while offering academic grounding. Anyone looking to further discussions on AI ethics and social impact would benefit greatly from joining.

Your book club is the best!! 🔥

This club has helped me put life experiences that I was truly confused and conflicted about into words and taught me the difference between being "technical" and being actually tech literate. These two are often conflated. The sequence of the books we've read are soooooooooo on point and I will never forget the things I've learned about the world through these authors and your teachings. In a world where everyone is being influenced by big tech to "know less, let AI do the work, just drop out of school or skip humanities/literacy portions of degree programs (as Elon says 🤮)" I love that we have our own little cozy corner where we are learning the things they want humanity to be ignorant of and truly improving ourselves. That in itself is already a battle won and a beautiful addition to the world 🌎 The worst thing a person or entity can do is deny or discourage another person or entity education. As we have seen throughout history, this is a malignant control tactic. We are quite literally not allowing that to happen. PS: the fact that you were able to get Timnit as a future guest speaker is absolutely iconic! Thank you !! ❤️🫂

This book club has helped me feel a sense of camaraderie and has provided a deeply human space online. We're reading about heavy and often overwhelming topics, but I always know I can come to this space and share in that experience with others. The rapid changes we are seeing across the world leave many people feeling alone, and the space that you - Catharina - have created has not only provided refuge but also inspired us to keep standing up and fighting back. All of this done with openness, authenticity, and a really good cry! Thank you for curating this space, and for being the change you want to see in the world!
